Here is something that you won't see in the next decade. The old porn theatre. The Metro Theatre has served Toronto since the 1970s showing porn films on the big screen. The theatre predates the video booth, where the viewer entered a small room and watched porn on a small 12 inch TV screen. Needless to say, the theatre predated the internet and its porn sites.
The facade of this building is covered with dated references of erotica such as Emanuelle, a 1970s soft porn film whose objective was to elevate the genre to art, and in turn is barely remembered. Now you can view almost any erotica or pornography on Vimeo, or stream any type of film from torrent sites, for free. In spite of the crushing competition of free material, this theatre still soldiers on, but barely. On the left side of the building, you can see a note on the poster display saying "SAVE THE THEATRE PLEASE DONATE". Nice building. Knowing Toronto, it will become a condo before the decade is through. Oh yes, the apple is biblical, not binary.
Update, 26th May, 2014: Remember the film Weekend at Bernie's? It's a 1989 film about two guys pretending that their murdered boss was still alive. Well, it's a similar thing about the Metro Theatre. It closed in December 2013, but it still looks like it's still in...well...business. Now the GRRREAT news. The theatre may become a fitness centre. Let's hope that they keep the facade intact.
